Why Most Ministries Are Failing on YouTube: And How to Fix It Fast

Most churches treat YouTube like a storage closet. Sermons go up every week, untouched, unedited, and unoptimized

And pastors wonder why nobody new is watching.

The truth? YouTube isn’t a sermon archive. It’s a mission field.

In this 5-minute crash course, Evan breaks down exactly how churches are wasting their reach and what they should be doing instead. No fluff, no theory—just the strategies we’ve used to grow a church channel past 500,000 subscribers without paid ads.

Step 1: Audit What’s Already Working

Before you do anything new, take 10 minutes to study your own content.

Open YouTube Studio and look at:

  • Click-through rate (CTR) — What’s the thumbnail and title for your best- and worst-performing videos?

  • Average view duration — Where are people dropping off? What segments are holding attention?

If you’re not willing to look at these numbers, you’re not serious about growing your channel.

Step 2: Cut the Fat

Your livestream probably includes 20 minutes of content no one online cares about.

Why? Because people on YouTube aren’t looking for your countdown timer or local announcements—they’re looking for answers. You need to trim everything that doesn’t directly support your video’s title.

That means:

  • Cut the countdown. You’re not NASA.

  • Cut the announcements. They’re not relevant outside your zip code.

  • Cut the worship—unless your mix is top-tier and people are actually searching for it.

What you leave in should hook the viewer in seconds and back up your title and thumbnail.

Step 3: Rethink Your Titles and Thumbnails

Your church logo doesn’t belong on your thumbnail.

Apply what we call the NC Rule: Nobody Cares.

  • Nobody cares about your church name.

  • Nobody cares about your branding.

  • They only care about their problem—and whether your video can help solve it.

Make your titles specific and your thumbnails simple. Big faces, clear emotion, and curiosity. And yes, use AI tools to help brainstorm—but make sure they understand the NC Rule first.
